Wacky Rigs For Bass Fishing.

Want to produce a lot of bass this spring and catch big bass at the same time? Look no further than the  wacky rig.  The Wacky Rig can take some experimentation along with some specialized terminal tackle, but it is extremely effective at catching bass in both shallow and deep waters from the spring spawn through fall. Th weightless worm rig is a big fish catcher and works exceptionally well, especially during the spring, and is a bait that excels at getting skittish fish in shallow clear waters. It will also work in dirty water as well.

Because of its lifelike appearance when falling and popping off the bottom, it’s a rig that most bass can’t resist. Below we’ve outlined what it takes to make a wacky rig, techniques to fish a wacky rig, and reasons why the wacky rig is so popular.

What rod is best for wacky rigs?

About 99% of the time, we use wacky rigs on a spinning rod. We like to use  casting rods for tight places as they are easier to pitch in these conditions.

What reel size is best for wacky rigs?

The most popular size spinning reel for wacky rigs is going to be 3000 or 3500 sized reels. Some anglers prefer the smaller 2500 series and have great results.

What size line is best for fishing wacky rigs?

6-10 lb fluorocarbon or monofilament line works well for  wacky rigs.

What size hook do I need for a wacky rig?

Wacky hooks of all sizes will work. Using a heavy gauge (thick) hook that won’t consistently tear your worm bait like smaller, skinnier hooks will.

You can also use O-rings if you don’t want to run the hook through your  soft plastic bait.

What worm is best for wacky rigs?

Numerous worms can be used for wacky rigs, but the most common two are going to be your  Gary Yamamoto SENKO, and a trick worm style bait. When wacky rigged, both have a unique fall that bass can’t resist.

Wacky rig fishing techniques.

Letting the bait do its own thing. Cast your bait to a target, whether that is under a dock or tree. Give it slack and let it sink to the bottom. Once you’ve hit the bottom, pop the bait up and let it fall again to the bottom.

Do this two to three times in your target area and if you haven’t got a bite, reel in and repeat.

Is the wacky rig weedless?

Wacky rigs can be fished weedless, making them great for fishing in grass. You can actually buy wacky rig hooks designed specifically for this.

What are the best places to fish a wacky rig?

There are a few different places where wacky rigs excel.

  • Under docks.
  • Under trees.
  • Rip rap.

Wacky rigs will work throughout the year but the best time to fish them is spring, followed by the fall when the bass move up shallow.
